February was a very busy month for us, with just about non-stop shop visitors! In addition to the visits and concerts by Terence Blanchard and Irvin Mayfield (see our NEWS page for details), we also met Rashawn Ross from the Dave Mathews band. Rashawn is a Monette mouthpiece client, and had asked Dave to custom design a new lead mouthpiece for him. Rashawn is anxiously awaiting delivery of his first Monette trumpet!   Also visiting were Paul Lepicard, Principal Trumpet of the Orchestra Colonne

Wynton Marsalis was recently on the David Letterman show promoting his new CD, "He and She." Wynton played his new PRANA 3 STC Bb for the occasion, which Dave Monette hand-delivered to him just a few days before the show. This new horn is the "next generation" PRANA 3 Bb, with every upgrade and design improvement we could think of built into the horn. Adam Rapa started asking us about a four valve insturment last year. He was looking for an instrument with an extended low register and a new sound that offered more power and a wider variety of colors than even his regular, custom PRANA 3 Bb. Since many players have asked us over the years to build various four valve instruments, we decided to take the plunge into four valve reality and see what we could come up with. The big challenge with this instrument was getting the resistance of the

Ron Miles latest CD is a trio album with Bill Frisell and Brian Blade, and it is just out of this world! Ron plays our SATTVA in low G on three of the tunes which were recorded live with the trio at DAZZLE, a popular jazz club in Denver. The remaining cuts were recorded in the studio, and Dave Monette was fortunate enough to be in the control room for the recording sessions.         The three musicians, under the expert guidance of producer Hans Wendt, came up with an amazing recording that

Patrick Hession wows the 2012 ITG audience

The Boss was smiling down on Patrick and Glenn Kostur after Patrick played Glenn's arrangement of ANGEL EYES with the house big band at the ITG conference. Patrick was completely OFF MIC - he played acoustically just filling the hall with sound... and the audience loved it.   This is a chart Glenn had wanted to write for MF for years, but it never fully materialized until a few weeks before the convention. We got special permission to video the tune, with the camera at the sound booth out in

In May of 2012 we packed up half the shop and moved to COLUMBUS GA for a week to attend the INTERNATIONAL TRUMPET GUILD conference. Jason, our customer relations manager, John our mouthpiece maker and Jeff Synder from our shop joined Karen Hangsterfer and Dave Monette in Columbus for a very full week of trumpet! This year's conference was hosted by Dr. Rob Murray, a long-time Monette client and a great friend of ours. Rob did a fantastic job putting this conference together!   Each day countless

Our clients had been asking for a RAJA in this weight for twenty years! The RAJNA is an updated, threaded integral mouthpiece version of our popular AJNA trumpet. What better name for this new threaded integral mouthpiece version of this instrument than combining the words RAJA and AJNA into RAJNA!   The RAJNA is an all-new design, with the same general proportions and layout of our new PRANA STC Bb trumpets and Terence's new full weight RAJA. The layout, proportions, sheet bracing design,

This is an all-new Monette C trumpet - and when we say all-new, we really mean ALL-NEW! It is a completely new design that is easier to hold, easier to hear both up close and at a distance, and in general more fun to play than any lightweight C trumpet we have ever made! Ghost tones ring out from this very unique instrument thanks to an all-new bell fabrication technique, the new mandrel 8 leadpipe designed just for this instrument, and a re-proportioned new tuning slide. Even the valve section

This outrageous new C trumpet was built for our friend Matt Sonneborn, who ordered it simply by asking for the best large bell medium weight C trumpet we have ever made!     This trumpet is incredibly easy to play - particularly for players used to playing large-bell Monette instruments. It has the same proportions as Charlie Schlueter's decorated SAMADHI C trumpet and Manny Laureano's new XLT lightweight PRANA C. Once Manny's new C trumpet was finished and the design proven under fire, then

Wynton Marsalis took delivery of our first P3-STC Bb over three years ago, and since then we've introduced new, re-proportioned "STC" versions of each weight and model of PRANA Bb we make. These new STC models are completely re-designed with a physical layout that makes the horn more comfortable to hold and easier to hear - both for the player behind the instrument and for the audience. The sound is livelier, the upper register is even easier, and the response is faster and at the same time

New PRANA STC Flugelhorn

Over a year ago we got a call from Wynton's office asking if we had a flugelhorn he could use for a new piece he had written for the LCJO that had a short flugel double for the trumpet section. We had not made a flugelhorn since we made just two as prototypes back in the late 1980's. Then in 1989 Art Farmer inspired the first FLUMPET, which quickly caught on with both jazz and classical players we work with. So the success of the Flumpet effectively put a 20 plus year hold on the updated

When we asked Terence what he wanted in his new RAJA, he just said, "You know...!" We took this to mean that he wanted the best full weight sheet-braced RAJA we have ever made... one that plays and sounds amazing.   It took us five months to build Terence's new trumpet, and we could not be happier with how it turned out. It is a full weight, state-of-the-art, threaded integral mouthpiece RAJA - the first of its kind. We matched the weight of his previous RAJA and personalized the upgraded

Our New, Production Silver Mouthpieces

These mouthpieces are very forgiving for people who are new to Monette equipment and concepts. After progressing on a Monette Silver series mouthpiece, a player may eventually need a specialized mouthpiece in a size other than the four silver mouthpieces sizes. For these players who need a dedicated mouthpiece for other keys of trumpet, a larger or deeper size for orchestral playing, or a mouthpiece specifically for lead trumpet, the next step is to one of our key-specific PRANA mouthpieces.

Mouthpiece Selection Guide

Why play a Monette Mouthpiece? Our Constant Pitch Center mouthpieces are designed to play with consistent timbre, resistance and intonation in every register and at any dynamic level.   Conventional mouthpieces compress the octaves, making the upper register flat and the low register sharp. They also change pitch when changing dynamic levels. This is undesirable as it forces the player to compensate unnaturally with their body simply to play in-tune When you see a trumpet player leaning back,

 - Check out the interview and first few notes on our Facebook page - A few years ago, our friend, paleontologist and cornet collector Niles Eldredge, planted the bug in my ear to make the ultimate Monette cornet. He suggested building my vision of what the next step in the evolution of the modern Bb cornet would be. This proposition made me think about what a cornet could be that it had never been before!  I drew the rough layout up quickly on a piece of cardboard at 100% scale, then played
